Course Duration, Timing and Course Loading The course requires a minimum of 35 hours training comprised 15 hours of lectures and 20 hours of practical which includes the written and practical evaluation. The course may take longer depending upon the background and experience of the trainees. The duration of the STCW AFF is 35 hours and the course will take 4 days. STCW AFF - Advanced Fire Fighting 1. This course STCW Advanced Fire Fighting is This course meets the requirements of Chapter VI, Section A-VI/3, of the STCW Convention, including 2010 Manila amendments. 2. Seafarers qualified in advanced fire fighting in accordance with Chapter VI, Section A-VI/3, paragraph 4 of the STCW Convention shall be required, every five years, to provide evidence of having maintained the required standard of competence to undertake the tasks, duties and responsibilities listed in column 1 of table A-VI/3. 3. This course is also designed to meet the requirements established by Transport Canada in the Marine Emergency Duty Training Courses TP4957,2016. Aims and objectives of training To enable course participants to learn about, understand and become proficient in: 1) Fire fighting procedures at sea and in port with particular emphasis on organization, tactics and command; 2) The use of water for fire-extinguishing, the effect on ship stability, precautions and corrective procedures; 3) Communication and co-ordination during fire fighting operations; 4) Ventilation control, including smoke extraction; 5) Control of fuel and electrical systems; 6) Fire fighting process hazards (dry distillation, chemical reactions, boiler uptake fires, etc.); 7) Fire fighting involving dangerous goods; 8) Fire precautions and hazards associated with storing and handling materials (paints, etc.); 9) Managing and controlling injured persons; 10) Procedures for co-ordination with shore-based fire fighters; 11) Preparing contingency plans; 12) Composition of fire parties and allocation of personnel to fire parties; 13) Strategies and tactics for controlling fires in various parts of the ship; 14) Fire-detection systems; 15) Fixed fire-extinguishing systems; 16) Portable and mobile fire-extinguishing equipment, including appliances, pumps and rescue, salvage, life-support, personal protective and communication equipment; 17) Requirements for statutory and classification societies; 18) Assessing cause of incidents involving fire.
