Confined Space Rescue (CSR)

Training Overview

This course is designed to provide workers and rescue teams with the knowledge and skills necessary to enter confined spaces and perform rescues. Course content will include: review of applicable regulations; confined space hazards & control measures; gas testing overview; ventilation; non-entry rescue techniques; respiratory protection; body manipulation; patient packaging; lifelines & retrieval systems; and use of a rescue permit/checklist. Practical training will be conducted at the NS Fire School’s confined space simulator and will include the following skills & exercises: gas testing; ventilation; entries using SCBA & SABA; body manipulation & SKED packaging; lifting systems; and multiple rescue exercises in various roles (rescuer, supervisor, support).

Training Duration & Timings

Approximately 24 hours of training completed over three (3) training days.

Classes run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (time can be altered if necessary).  Trainees absent from any component of the program will not be issued a certification until they have completed all requirements.

Training Certification

Upon successful completion of all training components, in accordance with the Training Standard, trainees will receive a Confined Space Rescue certificate from FSSC that is valid for two (2) years.


Training Certification

Minimum class size of six (6) is required for this course to proceed.


Trainees are expected to be in a good state of health and physically capable of taking part in and completing all practical exercises.

Trainees need to bring:
• Coveralls
• CSA Approved Footwear (safety boots)
